Photography often focuses on capturing moments as they happen. Family portraits, senior sessions, and milestone photographs all document important chapters of life. But sometimes photography becomes something more creative. Instead of simply documenting a moment, a portrait can be designed to tell a story about who someone is and what they love. Creative portrait sessions allow space for imagination, personality, and storytelling. Instead of standing for a traditional portrait, the subject becomes part of the scene.
Those are the sessions that I truly love creating.
One of my favorite creative portrait sessions began when a mom reached out with an idea for her son. She asked if I could photograph him surrounded by the things he loved. He was involved in many different activities, including taekwondo, violin, sports, and baseball, and she wanted a portrait that captured those parts of his personality in one image. I immediately loved the idea and told her we could absolutely create something like that. We planned the session around the activities that were important to him and arranged the items that represented the different parts of his life. His taekwondo uniform, violin, sports equipment, and baseball gear all became part of the portrait.
The result was a photograph that felt personal and expressive. Instead of a traditional portrait, it became a visual story about who he was during that chapter of his life. After seeing the final images, his mom loved them so much that she asked if we could create something similar for her daughter. Her daughter had different interests, so we designed her portrait around the things she loved most, including violin and gymnastics. Just like her brother’s portrait, the image reflected her personality and interests in a way that felt meaningful and unique.
Each portrait became its own story.
Creative portrait sessions allow photographers and families to collaborate in a different way. Instead of focusing only on poses, the session can include meaningful elements such as hobbies, interests, collections, or personal activities. These details help transform a portrait into something much more personal. For children especially, creative sessions can be exciting because the experience becomes about celebrating the things they love. The final images become more than photographs. They become visual memories of who someone was during that moment in their life.
Creative sessions also connect closely with my fine art portrait work. Projects such as my Daughters series explore storytelling, imagination, and themes that allow a portrait to feel more artistic and expressive. These types of sessions remind me that photography is not only about documenting life but also about interpreting it creatively.
