What to Expect During a Family Portrait Session

From Start to Finish

Booking a family portrait session is an exciting step, but it is completely normal to feel unsure about what the experience will actually look like.

Many families worry about how their children will behave, what to wear, or whether the session will feel stressful.

My goal is to make the entire experience feel relaxed, guided, and meaningful from beginning to end. When you know what to expect, you can fully enjoy the process and focus on what matters most, your family.

Here is exactly what a family portrait session looks like from start to finish.

Before Your Session:

Planning and Preparation

Once your session is booked, I guide you through every detail so you feel fully prepared. We will choose a location that fits your family. This might be a quiet beach like Footbridge Beach, a scenic coastal location like Nubble Lighthouse, or another meaningful place. I help you select a spot that photographs beautifully and feels natural for your family.

You will also receive guidance on what to wear. I help you coordinate outfits with soft, neutral tones and textures that photograph well together without feeling overly matched. Mothers are always my starting point when planning wardrobe, and we build from there.

Timing is carefully selected as well. Most sessions take place during golden hour, which is the hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering.

Arriving at Your Session

When you arrive, there is no pressure to rush or perform. I take a few minutes to connect with your family, especially your children. This helps everyone feel comfortable before we begin. Children do not need to be perfectly behaved. I create space for them to relax and be themselves. From the very beginning, I guide you with gentle direction so you never feel unsure of what to do.

During the Session:

A Natural and Guided Experience

Family sessions are a balance of guided posing and natural interaction. I will gently direct you into flattering positions while also encouraging movement, connection, and genuine moments. You are not expected to know how to pose. That is my job.

We will capture a mix of images, including:

• The classic everyone looking at the camera portrait

• Candid moments of laughter and connection

• Individual portraits of each child

• Parents with children

• The full family together in a relaxed, natural way

If your children need breaks, we take them. If they want to run, explore, or play, I often incorporate that into the session. Some of the most meaningful images come from these unplanned moments. Sessions are designed to feel easy and enjoyable, not rushed or rigid.

Golden Hour The Most Important Light

As the sun begins to set, the light becomes softer and more dimensional. This is when the most beautiful images are created. I position your family in a way that uses the light intentionally, creating that signature golden glow that feels timeless and warm. This is a key part of what makes professional photography different.

During outdoor sessions, lighting is always changing. No two sunsets are ever exactly the same, and that is part of what makes each session unique.

Every session is approached with intention, using the available light in a way that is both flattering and consistent with my work. While each gallery reflects its own natural conditions, every image is carefully created and refined to maintain the signature look and level of quality seen throughout my portfolio.

After Your Session: The Editing Process

After your session, each image is carefully reviewed and professionally edited. I refine color, adjust light, and enhance details while keeping your images natural and true to life. My editing style is consistent with the soft, golden hour aesthetic you see throughout my work. This process takes time because each image is handled with care and intention.

Your Gallery and Choosing Your Images

Once your gallery is ready, you will receive access to view your images. From there, you can select your favorites or choose to upgrade to your full gallery. I also guide clients through selecting heirloom products such as albums and prints so your images are not just stored on a screen, but preserved in a meaningful way. These photographs are designed to be held, displayed, and passed down.

The Experience as a Whole

A family portrait session is about more than just taking pictures. It is about slowing down, being present with your family, and capturing the connection you share right now. The laughter, the quiet moments, the way your children reach for you without thinking, these are the details that matter. You do not need perfect behavior, perfect outfits, or a perfect evening. You simply need to show up.

I take care of the rest.
