How I Plan Every Session for the Best Possible Outcome

When you hire a professional photographer, you are not just paying for the time spent taking photos. You are investing in everything that happens before the session even begins.

Every portrait session I photograph is thoughtfully planned with intention, purpose, and care. Because the difference between “nice photos” and images that truly feel like your family… comes down to preparation.

It Starts With Understanding Your Story

Before I ever pick up my camera, I take time to understand what matters most to you.

Every session is different. Some families want playful, candid moments with their children. Some seniors want images that feel confident and expressive. Some clients are celebrating something deeply meaningful: a milestone, a season of life, or even a memory tied to a specific place.

This is where your session begins.

Not at the beach.

Not at golden hour.

But with your story.

Location Is Chosen With Purpose

Location is never random. Along the York, Maine coastline, every beach and setting offers something different: Soft sand and dunes for relaxed, natural movement, rocky shoreline for dramatic, coastal imagery

quiet, tucked-away locations for a more intimate feel. I guide my clients in choosing a location that complements both their vision and the feeling they want their images to have. Because the right location doesn’t just look beautiful:  it supports the story we are telling.

Timing Is Everything (Why Golden Hour Matters)

Light is one of the most important elements in photography. I plan sessions around golden hour: the hour before sunset. Why? Because it creates: soft, flattering light, warm skin tones, and a natural glow that cannot be replicated.

This is how I achieve that signature look:

Photographs that feel warm, timeless, and full of life.

What You Wear Shapes the Entire Gallery

Wardrobe plays a bigger role than most people expect. Before your session, I provide guidance on color palettes that photograph beautifully at the beach, how to coordinate outfits without matching, textures and fabrics that add depth and movement. The goal is not perfection. It is cohesion. When everything works together: location, light, and wardrobe... your images feel effortless and refined.

I Plan With the End Result in Mind

This is where my approach is different. I am not just thinking about how your photos will look on a screen.

I am thinking about: how they will look printed and framed in your home,  how they will feel in an album years from now, and which images will become part of your family’s legacy. Every decision I make during your session is guided by that final outcome.

During the Session: Guided, But Natural

You will never be left wondering what to do. I gently guide you through the entire session while still allowing space for natural, unscripted moments to unfold. This balance is what creates images that feel both: polished and genuinely you.

After the Session: The Final Transformation

Your images are carefully selected and professionally edited to reflect the experience we created together.

This includes: color consistency and tone, skin tone correction, and subtle enhancements that elevate the image without over-editing. The goal is always the same: to create photographs that feel timeless, natural, and true.

Why Planning Matters More Than People Realize

Anyone can take a picture... but creating images that feel meaningful, cohesive, and lasting… requires intention. Planning is what transforms a session into an experience. And an experience into something you will hold onto for years.

An Experience Designed With You in Mind

From the first conversation to the final image, every step of the process is designed to give you more than just photographs. It is about creating something that feels like home.
