""Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction."

~ Ronald Reagan

A young girl runs across a green field holding an American flag above her head under a cloudy sky.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, may we never forget that the freedoms we enjoy today were purchased by the courage, sacrifice, and service of countless men and women who came before us. Their legacy lives on not only in our history books, but in our families, our communities, and the generations yet to come.

Freedom Is Not Free

As America approaches the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence, I have found myself reflecting on the word freedom.

It is a word we use often.

We speak of freedom in our conversations, teach it in our schools, celebrate it on holidays, and see it waving from front porches and town greens throughout the summer.

Yet sometimes I wonder if we have become so accustomed to freedom that we forget what a remarkable gift it truly is.

Freedom allows us to gather with our families around the dinner table.

Freedom allows us to worship according to our beliefs.

Freedom allows us to build businesses, pursue dreams, raise children, and create lives filled with purpose and meaning.

Freedom allows our children to run barefoot through the grass, laugh without worry, and dream about who they might become.

These simple moments are so woven into our daily lives that it can be easy to overlook them.

But freedom was never guaranteed.

It was earned.

And it continues to be protected by generations of men and women who answer the call to serve.

A Personal Reflection

Military service has always been woven into the fabric of our family.

My husband has served in the United States Navy for more than two decades. His commitment to service has shaped much of our family's life together. The Navy has taken him away from home, required sacrifices from our family, and demanded a level of dedication that many people never see.

Yet through it all, he has remained willing to serve something greater than himself.

He is not alone.

Many members of our family have worn the uniform before him.

My uncle served in the Marine Corps.

Other family members served in the Navy.

My husband's grandfather served.

His stepfather served.

His brother served.

His uncle served.

Like so many American families, military service is part of our story.

Because of that, holidays such as Independence Day carry a deeper meaning for me.

They are not simply celebrations filled with fireworks and cookouts.

They are reminders of sacrifice.

They are reminders of courage.

They are reminders that generations of Americans have stood watch so that future generations could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

What Freedom Looks Like

When most people think of freedom, they often think of historic events, famous speeches, or moments recorded in history books.

But I think freedom is often found in much quieter places.

It looks like a child running through a field.

It looks like laughter shared among siblings.

It looks like summer evenings that seem to last forever.

It looks like a family gathered together beneath a fading sunset.

It looks like a little girl carrying an American flag across a grassy field, completely unaware of the sacrifices that made that moment possible.

The older I get, the more I realize that these ordinary moments are often the most extraordinary.

They are the moments we remember.

They are the moments we miss when they are gone.

And they are the moments worth preserving.

Childhood Is Fleeting

As both a mother and a photographer, I am constantly reminded of how quickly childhood passes.

One day your child is asking to be pushed on the swings.

The next they are driving a car.

One day they are carrying a favorite stuffed animal everywhere they go.

The next it sits quietly on a shelf as they grow into the next chapter of life.

The days can feel long, but the years move remarkably fast.

Photographs become anchors.

They allow us to revisit a season that would otherwise slip through our fingers.

Years from now, these images will not simply be photographs.

They will become memories.

A reminder of who your child was.

A reminder of the way they smiled.

A reminder of the things they loved.

A reminder of a summer that seemed endless.

A reminder of a childhood that passed too quickly.

The Inspiration Behind This Session

As I began thinking about America's upcoming 250th anniversary, I knew I wanted to create something meaningful.

I didn't want to create a session that focused solely on flags and patriotic decorations.

I wanted to create something that celebrated the freedom those symbols represent.

I wanted to capture the feeling of an American summer.

The feeling of childhood.

The feeling of possibility.

The feeling of gratitude.

The result was a simple session built around the things many of us remember most fondly.

Bare feet in the grass.

A pinwheel spinning in the breeze.

Vintage Coca Cola bottles on a weathered table.

A beloved stuffed animal.

An American flag waving against a summer sky.

Simple things.

Timeless things.

The kinds of moments that connect generations.

Looking Forward

This year marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

For 250 years, Americans have built families, communities, businesses, churches, schools, and lives upon the foundation of freedom established by those who came before us.

As we celebrate this historic milestone, I hope we do more than enjoy fireworks and parades.

I hope we pause to remember.

I hope we reflect upon the sacrifices that made those celebrations possible.

I hope we express gratitude for those who have served.

And I hope we cherish the ordinary moments that freedom allows us to enjoy every day.

Because one day those ordinary moments become our most treasured memories.
