Girls on the Run | Topsham, Maine

Yesterday, I had the privilege of spending the entire day photographing the Girls on the Run 5K events in Topsham, Maine.
From the moment families began arriving in the morning until the final celebrations of the afternoon, the day was filled with excitement, encouragement, determination, and joy.
Everywhere I looked, there were smiling faces, teammates supporting one another, coaches offering words of encouragement, volunteers lending a helping hand, and families cheering from the sidelines.
While the event centered around a 5K, it quickly became clear that the day was about much more than running.
It was about confidence.
It was about courage.
It was about community.

One of the things I love most about photography is the opportunity to witness moments that matter.
Throughout the day, I watched girls challenge themselves, overcome nerves, and discover what they were capable of accomplishing. Some approached the starting line with confidence while others looked understandably nervous. Yet one by one, they all took those first steps forward.
Every runner had her own story.
Some raced toward the finish line with incredible speed.
Others stayed side by side with friends, encouraging one another every step of the way.
Some walked portions of the course but refused to give up.
What mattered was not how fast they finished.
What mattered was that they kept going.
What stood out most throughout the day was the overwhelming support surrounding every participant.
Parents cheered.
Coaches encouraged.
Volunteers celebrated.
Teammates lifted one another up.
There was a genuine sense of kindness and encouragement from start to finish.
In a world that often places so much emphasis on competition, it was refreshing to witness an event where the focus was on personal growth, teamwork, confidence, and celebrating every accomplishment, big or small.
From the first families arriving in the morning to the final celebrations of the afternoon, I spent the entire day documenting the Girls on the Run 5K events in Topsham. It was sunny, cloudy, and then became very rainy. Between the morning and afternoon races, I photographed approximately 4,000 images, and culled down to about 1,300 in the morning and roughly the same in the afternoon. Capturing everything from pre race excitement and team photos to the determination on the course and the joy of crossing the finish line.
Every runner had a story.
Every family had a reason to celebrate.
Every photograph became a small piece of a much larger story about confidence, perseverance, friendship, and community.
It was an honor to spend the day preserving these moments for the girls, their families, coaches, volunteers, and everyone who helped make the event possible.
As a mother and a photographer, I know how quickly childhood passes. The details of yesterday's race may fade with time, but the feelings often remain.
The excitement of accomplishing something difficult.
The pride of crossing a finish line.
The encouragement of a teammate.
The cheers from family members waiting at the end of the course.
These are the moments that help shape confidence and character.
These are the moments worth remembering.
Years from now, these girls may not remember every mile marker or every turn in the course, but they will remember how they felt. They will remember discovering that they were capable of more than they thought possible.
To every participant, coach, volunteer, family member, and organizer who made yesterday possible, thank you for allowing me to be part of such an incredible day.
To every girl who crossed that finish line, congratulations.
You showed courage.
You showed determination.
You supported one another.
Most importantly, you proved that you are capable of more than you may realize.
It was an honor to witness and document your accomplishments.
Photography is about more than preserving how a moment looked.
It is about preserving how it felt.
Yesterday was a beautiful reminder that some of life's most meaningful victories are not measured by speed, medals, or placement. They are measured by the courage to keep moving forward, even when something feels difficult.
Every single girl who crossed that finish line accomplished something worth celebrating.
And I am grateful to have been there to capture it.

Relive the Day

The confidence, courage, and strength these girls demonstrated on race day deserve to be celebrated long after the finish line has been crossed.
As a photographer and a mother, I believe childhood moves far too quickly. The milestones, accomplishments, and everyday moments that seem ordinary today often become the memories we cherish most tomorrow.
If you're looking to document your family, celebrate a senior year, capture your child's unique personality, or preserve a meaningful season of life, I would be honored to work with you.
